Middle of the night stakeout ...
I am not a HUGE fan of the hampsters that the girls just HAD to have and that I get to take care of but I can live with the 3 that we are finally down to. We started out with 2 and that number rapidly grew to 14 which thankfully was reduced quickly due to natural selection and the mercy of a nice woman at a garage sale. The last three have been pretty easy to deal with but they occasionally end up roaming freely thanks to the twins. For some reason Megan and Abby thought the rodents would like to play barbies with them yesterday morning and SWEAR that they put both of them back in the cage with the door shut tightly. Understand my concern when DH and I were both awakened around 3:45 am by the sound of rustling and clanging in the kitchen this morning! I did a mental rundown on the status of the various people and pets that reside in and around the Hicks residence and couldn't place the noise with any of the cats or the dog or the kids....this left just a few options, none of which I wanted to think of! Notice DH was not concerned with noises in the kitchen cabinets to do the husbandly thing and go check it out for me! I got up and checked out the doors and windows to make sure we hadn't been entertaining a burgular and noticed a banging noise again in the vicinity of the kitchen, I just couldn't quite place it and then it disappeared again. I was certain that there was something so I decided to sit down on the kitchen floor and wait it out! Lo and behold, there it was again, a scurrying noise! Now I was envisioning some large member of the rodent family, we frequently have mice in the garage and I was just sure they had invited their Rat neighbor over to see what was worth eating inside the house! I must have sat on the kitchen floor for almost 30 minutes trying to pin down the source of the noise. Finally I decided which of the lower cabinets was making the noise and turned on the light, no way I was making this discovery in the DARK! Keep in mind that we have those cool pull out drawers in all of our lower cabinets, I opened the cabinet next to the dishwasher, pull out the drawer and see these two beady little black eyes looking up at me! HOW THE HECK did that little thing GET IN THERE? The cabinets were all closed, there are no holes in the underside of the cabinet! I was too tired to think about it fully last night but this morning I was considering these things as I took EVERYTHING out of the lower cabinets so I could wash it ALL. Who knows where that thing had been!?! Yikes, the thought makes me sick! At least all of my tupperware and lids are sparkling clean! Hopefully the kids can keep closer track of the rodents, one more late night stake out and I may have to let them loose in the field behind the house!
Back to knitting tomorrow....gotta go watch the closing ceremonies!
